Youth Faith Development

Our curriculum is designed to help students in grades 5 through 8 move from a childhood faith into a deep, personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

To build a strong community where siblings and friends can learn together, all students in grades 5–8 cover the same core theme each year.

We follow a four-year rotating cycle. Because the topics do not build on one another, a student entering the 5th grade can jump right in, no matter which year of the cycle we are currently on. By the end of 8th grade, every student will have completed all four essential pillars of Catholic teaching.

Our sessions are balanced, high-energy, and interactive. Rather than sitting in a lecture, students engage their minds (learning the truth), their hearts (personal reflection), and their hands (living it out).

Each typical 75-minute monthly session follows a specific rhythm:

• Large Group (15–20 mins): We kick off with a high-energy environment featuring icebreakers, praise & worship music, and an engaging big-picture intro to the night’s topic.
• Small Group (40–45 mins): Students break into small faith communities to dive into deeper discussions, connect the topic to Scripture, and participate in a practical, hands-on activity.
• Wrap-Up & Sending (5–10 mins): We gather back together for a final reflection, closing prayer, and action steps for the month ahead.

Note on Schedule: The curriculum consists of 15 core teaching sessions throughout the year. One session each month is specifically set aside for dedicated Family or Service Activities.

The Four-Year Curriculum Cycle:

Year 1: “What We Believe” (The Creed)

• Focus: An overview of the Creed, Salvation History, and the Trinity.
• Goal: To help students understand the “big story” of God’s love and discover their unique place in it.
• Topic Highlights: Creation and the problem of sin; Jesus as true God and true man; the Paschal Mystery; the Holy Spirit; the marks of the Church; Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory; and crafting a personal faith story.

Year 2: “How We Worship” (Sacraments & Liturgy)

• Focus: A deep dive into the seven Sacraments, the Mass, and the liturgical seasons.
• Goal: To help students experience worship not as a ritual, but as a living encounter with God.
• Topic Highlights: The Mass as “Heaven on Earth”; step-by-step exploration of Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony; living the seasons of Advent, Lent, and Easter; culminating in a beautiful Worship & Adoration Night.

Year 3: “How We Live” (The Moral Life)

• Focus: The Beatitudes, the Ten Commandments, virtues, and modern Catholic Social Teaching.
• Goal: To equip students with the tools to live confidently as disciples in today’s culture.
• Topic Highlights: Human dignity and being made in God’s image; forming a healthy conscience; habits for holiness (virtues); caring for the poor and vulnerable; defending life at all stages; navigating healthy relationships and chastity; and putting faith into practice with a class service project.

Year 4: “How We Pray” (Prayer & Spiritual Life)

Topic Highlights: Jesus as our model of prayer; breaking down the Our Father; praying with Scripture (Lectio Divina); the Rosary and the Saints; navigating prayer during times of joy or suffering; discernment (listening to God’s voice); and building a customized, personal prayer plan.

Focus: Different expressions of prayer, devotions, Scripture meditation, and learning to listen to God.

Goal: To help students develop a consistent, personal prayer life and the confidence to talk to God daily.
