Home & School Association
What is Home and School?
The Home and School Association is our “Parent Organization” here at St. John School. As a parent, you are automatically part of St. John Home and School Association. Our purpose is to create a successful partnership between parents and school, so together we can help provide a quality education for all children. While St. John Home and School Association is a vehicle to mobilize parental efforts in support of the school, it also seeks to create and enrich a sense of community and school family. Any questions you may have regarding our Home and School Association or special events may be directed to HomeandschoolSJS@gmail.com.
St. John Home and School Association meets at 6:30 p.m. every third Wednesday in the Teachers Lounge at St. John School during the school year. We also host a meeting to kick off the school in late August, which is typically held offsite.
There are four officer positions that are held in the Home and School Association. They are two-year terms. Each officer can serve a maximum of four years. The positions are as follows: chair, co-chair, treasurer and secretary.
Jenn Vanden Hogen is the chair of St John Home and School Association. Jenn has been a SJS parent since 2012 and has been Chair since 2017. She and her husband Mike have one daughter who is a student at SJS. Before becoming an officer, she volunteered for the St. John Craft Sale, Teacher Appreciation Week and Cheesefest. Jenn also works part-time for St. John School in the preschool room and volunteers within the parish.
Bobbie Jo VandenHeuvel is the co-chair of St. John Home and School Association. Bobbie Jo and her husband Jay have Caroline (8th grade), Anna (6th grade), and Leo (3rd grade) all attending SJS. Bobbie Jo has been volunteering for Home and School’s Hot Dog Day the last couple years and has also been the contact parent for class raffle baskets at the craft sale. In the past, Bobbie Jo has also been a leader for the St. John’s Little Flowers Girls Club.
Paula Willey is the treasurer of the St. John Home and School Association. Paula is an SJS parent of two sons. Prior to joining Home and School, she has helped out with many of its various annual activities throughout the years.
Shannon Verboomen is the secretary of St. John Home and School Association. She and her husband Phil have three children, two that attend SJS. Before becoming an officer, Shannon volunteered in various school activities the last few years. She also works part time at a nearby hospital.
It takes a tremendous amount of volunteers to help with special events and fundraising. All profits from these events are used to fulfill the extra needs of the school and teachers. We would love to have you join us in our efforts, even if you only have a small window of time to volunteer! Opportunities to volunteer are available during the day, evenings or even during the weekends. Watch for a Volunteer Interest Form at the Parent Meeting early in the school year or contact Jenn Vanden Hogen at HomeandSchoolSJS@gmail.com for more information or sign up through the Sign-up Genius links we send out throughout the year. We appreciate all our volunteers because without you this could not be done!
In order to provide support for the school, St. John Home and School Association participates or organizes events to raise money.
Culver’s Night: Twice a year, families are able to enjoy food and fellowship as we usually pack the Culver’s in Little Chute from 5:00-8:00pm. 10% of sales are donated to St. John Home & School Association. Teachers volunteer to be food runners and our students enjoy seeing their teachers outside of the school setting.
Hometown Christmas Craft Sale: This is an annual fall event held in early November which is our largest fundraiser for the year. This event includes vendors, bake sale, turkey luncheon, and the very popular Theme Basket Raffle and Silent Auction. Each classroom and groups of staff members are assigned a theme. We ask for parent volunteers to assist with the collection of basket items and to participate in the basket assembly night to arrange the collections. All facets of the St. John Nepomucene Catholic Community come together for this great community event. Look below for the 2021 date!
Cheesefest: St. John Home & School Association runs a successful food booth at Cheesefest (annual festival held at Doyle Park the first Friday to Sunday in June). We serve burgers, brats, hot dogs, etc. to raise money. Parents volunteer to help run the booth.

Hot Dog Day is a long standing tradition at St. John School, spanning over 40 years. It is an opportunity for little buddies and big buddies to share lunch and recess together. Parents and grandparents are always welcome to help. Watch for a Sign Up Genius to volunteer! The lunch includes a hot dog, chips, soda/water/milk, and a dessert for $2.00. There will be pizza instead of hot dogs in November, March and April. Cost is the same. An extra hot dog or slice of pizza is available on that day for $1.00.
