School & Community Events
St. John School has lots of exciting, special events throughout the school year. For exact dates, please see the CALENDAR.
RED CARPET MASS
We literally roll out the red carpet for students coming in for the first all-school Mass of the year!
Families and friends are encouraged to line the red carpet and cheer on the students as they process from the school to church, and Father Ron, Deacon Dave, and Deacon Bruce greet them with high fives and handshakes as they enter into the church.
HOT DOG DAY
This event sponsored by Home and School is once a month on a Friday, where teachers and students can dress in casual clothes for the day and for lunch have hot dogs, soda or water, a snack and a dessert.
CHRISTMAS CONCERT
In December, students in 3K-8th grade perform Christmas songs for family and friends. Students in the orchestra and band will also perform Christmas songs at a separate Christmas concert.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
Catholic Schools Week is a national celebration of Catholic education. This week-long celebration begins the last Sunday in January and ends on Friday with the Pep Rally for God (see below). SJS celebrates Catholic Schools Week with daily themes for dressing up and special activities such as a pizza and ice cream social, bowling field trip and an outing for preschoolers.
PEP RALLY FOR GOD
The Pep Rally For God is the final event during Catholic Schools Week. Friday afternoon the kids in Grades 4K – 8 perform a contemporary Christian song and dance for family and friends. St. John School staff members usually join in with a cheer or song as well. This is an amazing tradition you won’t want to miss.
COLOR RUN
New for the ’21-’22 school year, this fun, family event is held on the SJS green space. Home & School provides free shirts for every student and staff member that get tye-dyed as they run past the color stations that are staffed by teacher and parent volunteers.
MOTHER’S DAY TEA & DONUTS FOR DAD
For the mother’s or special women and the dads or special guys of the 1st and 2nd graders, Home & School provides the refreshments and activities for these events and works with staff to organize.
TRUNK OR TREAT
This event is free for families of SJS and Faith Development. Home & School provides pizza, chips and beverages, and parents provide a trunk and treats for kids to go trick or treating. Families are asked to bring a donation to the St. John Food Pantry.
BAND & ORCHESTRA SPRING CONCERT
Students in band and orchestra put on a performance in the spring to showcase the accomplishments they made over the school year. Students in grades 4-8 are eligible for band, and grades 5-8 are eligible for orchestra.
LIVING STATIONS OF THE CROSS
The stations of the cross are acted out in a play format by the 7th grade students. Even though some stations can be very dramatic, they are acted out in a gentle enough fashion to capture the audience of the younger students through 8th grade. It is a wonderful, family-friendly, reflective experience to enhance your Holy Week.
