* Saint Peter’s Basilica is built on the tomb of Saint Peter, which was discovered during renovations.
* In the United States, Catholic hospitals employ almost 750,000 people, and one in six patients are treated in a Catholic hospital.

The Chapel where St. Joan of Arc prayed is in Wisconsin!
Formerly located in Chasse, France, the Chapel was moved piece-by-piece to the Americas and it resided for a time on Long Island. Now it is on the campus of Marquette University in Milwaukee. A wonderful place to visit and pray!

What do you know about the Vatican Swiss Guard?
The Swiss Papal Guard protects the Pope. Wearing uniforms designed by Michelangelo and commonly armed with halberds, they are capable of using heavier weapons if needed. The halberd consists of an axe blade topped with a spike mounted on a long shaft.
Each member is Catholic, male, and Swiss and must complete military training in Switzerland. They must demonstrate good conduct and be at least five-foot-eight in height. The Swiss Papal Guard is the oldest active military unit in continual existence since 1506. They are willing to give their lives for the Pope, in extreme circumstances.

Lent is the perfect time to practice the gift of love and form a lifelong habit. How are we doing on the following commandment of love?
When asked which commandment was the most important, Jesus said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it. Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37–39)

Did you know…
The ONLY Christian church in existence for the first 1,000 years of Christian history was the Roman Catholic Church. All other Christian churches which exist today can trace their linage back to the Roman Catholic Church. Most non-Catholic churches which exist today are less than a century or two old by comparison.

What is a simple way to explain Catholicism to someone?
Catholics belong to a Christ-centered faith community that views Jesus Christ as the foundation. Catholics share Jesus’ vision and model their lives after Jesus’ example of love. Catholics are called to care for one another and to use their unique gifts and talents for the good of the community and the world.

The Church’s feasts and celebrations run on a yearlong cycle, which we call the “liturgical year.” The “liturgical year” starts on the first Sunday of Advent. So it’s a new liturgical year when Advent starts and Advent is a slightly different length each year.
It starts four Sundays before Christmas, but because Christmas is on a fixed date, and could fall on different days of the week; Advent can be as short as three weeks and a day (like it is this year), or as long as four weeks.
